Student involvement in DE

In a recent conversation with a few faculty members who teach on-line we all discovered that we have much different expectations about student involvement in our courses. Since my course is discussion based I think it is important for students to log-in nearly every day a module is open to monitor and comment on the discussion. When my students learn of my expectation they keep telling me that in their other on-line classes they only had to log-in twice per module and make two posts to the discussion.

I think a discussion on this topic may be enlightening to many of us teaching on-line.

New Blog Community

I am really glad that Cynthia "signed" me up. Is this space reserved only for SCCC faculty members who teach online courses?

I enjoy using SLN. Currently I am teaching two courses with SLN. So I am a little worried to hear that in a couple of years we will not be able to use SLN anymore. Is this true?

New RSS Feeds

Hoorah! I've just discovered how to add RSS feeds to my website!

I mean, I know how to add them to websites that I create using Dreamweaver, but it took me a while to figure out how to set up the crontab using my cPanel in Drupal to get them here.

But better late than never. And I figured it out on my own, sans assistance from my OpenSourceHost tech support. So I'm pretty happy with myself.

I've selected the Chronicle of Higher Education's Wired Campus feed as well as the feed from Inside Higher Ed.

Faculty Collaborations in Distance Education

Hello!

I'm happy to announce that I've started posting a few pages on this website to facilitate the sharing of information and ideas regarding the development and teaching of distance education courses. I'd like to use this blog to continue the conversations.

As a faculty rep to the Distance Education Committee (DEC) and as one of the college's DE peer faculty mentors, I see my role not as mentoring or teaching others how to do DE but as facilitating collaborations and interactions among current and prospective DE faculty. We have some really strong, smart DE instructors at the college, and I think it'd be great to use this space to share their good ideas and approaches so that others can learn from them as well as offer their own contributions.
